A cooling or heating system based on a fancoil-chiller can work either individually for each room with its own remote control, or for one large room under the control of one central control panel.

Fancoil- this is an indoor unit (similar to a split system), which is a heat exchanger. To control the fan coil, various control panels are used.

Here are the most common naming conventions:

  • thermostat for two pipe or four pipe fan coil unit;
  • control panel for fan coil;
  • fan coil control panel
In turn, the thermostat can be:
  • Electromechanical (with a sliding switch and "twists" and a built-in control part). Nowadays, such a performance is already a thing of the past;
  • Digital (with LCD display, push-button or touch switch of operating modes, also with built-in control power part), an example of such a thermostat;
  • Digital, consisting of two parts. Executive part () and room.
What an advanced fan coil thermostat can do:
  • turn the fancoil on and off;
  • switch operating modes cooling, ventilation;
  • turn off or switch the fan speed or automatic control;
  • change the setpoint temperature, that is, the temperature that needs to be provided in the room;
  • switch the operating mode hot or cold (depending on the temperature of the coolant);
  • display on the display of the current temperature in the room, operating mode, current fan speed;
  • organization of fan coil operation according to the schedule (daily, weekly);
  • the ability to combine several fan coil units into a single control network using the MODBUS communication protocol.

To organize the work of a group of fan coil units, controlled from a single remote control, let's imagine any store in a shopping center with an area of, for example, from 1000 sq.m.

Suppose 5 fan coils of different types are installed. An example of a fan coil in the trading floor in the picture below.

There are several options for organizing the management of these fan coil units.

Option number 1
For each fan coil unit, its own thermostat (or control panel) is installed in different places, then the store administrator periodically goes through each thermostat, sets the desired temperature in the room. Depending on the number of visitors, the temperature in the room also changes. That way, if it gets too hot, the administrator goes back and sets the desired temperature on each thermostat.

Option number 2
We still use five thermostats, but installed next to each other. Here the algorithm of the administrator's work from option No. 1 is repeated

Option number 3
One thermostat () is installed, which controls all fan coil units at once through a remote network. This approach makes it possible to immediately change the desired temperature, fan speed, etc. at once.

It also has the opportunity to bring the control of all fan coil units of the shopping center into a single dispatcher console. Thus, control and remote control of all fan coil units of the installed shopping centers will be implemented.
The organization of communication between the controllers and the control room is implemented on the popular and one of the simplest communication protocols MODBUS RTU RS485

A description of the controller registers for a fan coil unit (A4 model), as well as full technical specifications, are available in the manual in PDF format.

In conclusion, we can add that the use of automation and control systems for the operation of fan coil units is widely used not only in shopping centers, but also in office buildings, congress halls, restaurants, utility rooms of stadiums, grocery and manufactured goods stores, and hotels.
Now you have a choice of how the fan coil control will be organized in your premises.

Today, fan coil units are increasingly used for cooling/heating in buildings. And chiller-fan coil systems are already coming to new mass housing. The main purpose of the fancoil is heating or cooling rooms, the installation of thermal curtains. Time dictates to abandon the usual split-air conditioning systems because of their impracticality and, most importantly, because of the violation of the appearance of building facades.

Chiller-fan coil systems have long been used in hotel climate systems, many business centers and offices are designed with fan coil units and chillers.

Chiller-Fan Coil systems are more energy efficient than rooftop systems and only lose out in efficiency to variable refrigerant flow systems (VRF or Daikin called VRV). For private residences, it makes sense to consider Daikin VRV systems as a practical and cost-effective solution.

Fancoil in the interior

It is difficult to show how the fan coil looks in the interior. More often it is a decorative air duct grille. But before installation or during installation, it can still be seen. And this hidden nature of his is highly valued by interior designers. The only thing you need to know before the design project is how much space is required in the inter-ceiling space for ventilation ducts and fan coil units.

What is a fancoil and chiller?

Fan coil units are classified by location and are wall-mounted, cassette, duct, floor and ceiling. Frameless fan coil units are mounted behind false ceilings and decorative panels. Fancoils are also classified into vertical and horizontal.

There are two-pipe (only for cooling) and four-pipe fan coil units (cooling and heating air). The four-pipe fan coil system allows you to use one fan coil for heating and others for cold at the same time. In winter they can work as central heating radiators. Accordingly, the price of four-pipe fan coil units is higher.

The chiller-fan coil system is a centralized, multi-zone air conditioning system in which the coolant between the central cooling machine (chiller) and local heat exchangers (air cooling units, fan coil units) is a cooled liquid circulating under relatively low pressure - ordinary water (in tropical climates) or an aqueous solution of ethylene glycol (in temperate and cold climates).

In addition to the chiller (s) and fan coil units, the system includes piping between them, a pumping station (hydraulic module) and an automatic control subsystem (automation).

How to control fan coil units with Zennio

The question arises which fan coil controller should be used?

It depends on the type of fan coil control. There are several options.

Option A

Shut-off valves and fan speed are controlled by relays:

  • : for 4 fan coil units with 2 pipes and 3 fan speeds.
  • : for 2 fan coil units with 2 pipes and 3 fan speed settings.
  • : for 1 fan coil unit with 2 pipes and 3 fan speed settings.
  • : for 4 fan coil units with 2 pipes and 3 fan speeds.*
  • : for 2 fan coil units with 2 pipes and 3 fan speeds.*
  • : for 1 fan coil unit with 2/4 pipes and 3 fan speed settings.

Option B

Shut-off valves are controlled by a 0-10V signal, and the fan rotation mode is controlled by a relay:

  • : for 1 fan coil with 2/4 pipes up to 4 fan speeds.

Option C

Shut-off valves are controlled by a relay, and the fan rotation mode is controlled by a 0-10V signal:

  • : for 2 fan coil units with 2/4 pipes and fan rotation mode via 0-10V signal.

* Note: The and modules are multifunctional drives that can be parameterized for 2-pipe fan coil units as a fan and shut-off valve controller (4 or 2 fan coil units respectively), as a shutter controller (8 and 4 shutters respectively) or as separate relay outputs ( 16 and 8 respectively).

With such a wide range of fan coil control devices, all problems related to cooling / heating in buildings are solved.

In our country, the number of fan coil units installed as cold and heat supply systems in shopping centers, shops, and apartments is increasing every year. With all the variety of fan coil models from different manufacturers, the variety of control systems for these fan coil units leaves much to be desired. We had to deal with almost all control panels for fan coil units and have something to compare today's hero of the article. Meet the A1 fan coil control panel. As fan coil control panels, ordinary wall thermostats from Carrier, Eberle, Siemens, Aerotek and other manufacturers are most often used. As a rule, they allow you to select one of three fan speeds, the desired air temperature and cooling / heating mode. More advanced models can be programmed for day / night, different temperatures at set intervals, and so on.
But most often you can find the good old "twists". Famous thermostats from Carrier.
In my opinion, in rooms with designer renovation, such consoles look somewhat archaic. :) It seems to me that it is for this reason that the thermostat manufacturers decided on their revolutionary development.

Give modern equipment modern management!!! :) However, this is purely for everyone.

But back to our hero: A1 - fan coil control panel. The title is already unusual. This remote control is produced in Russia, which at first a little strained. A dark horse. :) But, looking ahead, I will say that they were afraid in vain.

I must say that this control panel is not quite a remote control. It consists of two separate elements - this is, in fact, the control panel PU1 and the fan coil control module SBH. They even ship separately.

By the way, the air temperature sensor is included in the scope of delivery of the A1 control panel. Therefore, this kit can be called a thermostat. :)

The A1 control panel is designed for two or four pipe fan coil units. In this case, the control module is connected directly to the fan coil unit and is located next to it. And already from it a twisted pair (RS485) connects the control panel PU1 and a couple more wires to power the control panel + 12V.

This is a plus. It is not necessary to lay a multi-core cable for the remote control. Moreover, the absence of 220V on the control panel is also a plus. The panel and the module can be spaced apart at a distance of no further than 20m, which is quite a lot.
Also, the A1 control panel allows you to control the fan coil valves with a supply voltage of both 220V and 24V (through a transformer).

The control module pleases with the workmanship. I didn’t take a photo of the filling, but all the elements were soldered with high quality, the relays were not cheap, in general they were happy for the domestic manufacturer.
Microswitches allow you to select a two or four pipe fan coil unit. All markings are clear and understandable. It is almost impossible to make a mistake when connecting.
The control module has a mini USB connector for firmware updates. This allows, firstly, to update the settings from the manufacturer, and secondly, the manufacturer can order his own fan coil control algorithm, which can be entered into the control module.

By the way, the control panel also has a mini USB connector for updating the firmware.
The control panel can be installed in a standard socket/switch box. The connector for connecting and mini USB protrudes slightly.
The control panel is made of pleasant to the touch plastic. The buttons are easy to press, clicks are easy to feel and do not need to apply excessive pressure. The clarity of the button labeling is a bit lacking, as the icons on them are slightly recessed and the same color as the entire button.
In terms of dimensions, the control panel PU1 and the control module SBH are somewhat similar.
Some more information from the manufacturer.

When the A1 remote control is turned on, the screen displays the current temperature, time, day of the week, auto/cold/heat mode and fan speed 1/2/3/auto.

The display is large, with clear numbers. In general, as in the first picture at the beginning. But most of all I was pleased with the presence of the native language, for which special thanks to the developers from satisfied customers. But the most important thing in this remote control is the control algorithm. This is, so to speak, the whole point of this remote control.

There are similar algorithms from other manufacturers, but for some reason it never worked properly. The point is the following. When controlling the indoor climate, the A1 remote control not only regulates the on and off of the hot and cold water valves, but also controls the fan speed.

The operation of the control panel can be visualized in the picture below.
When turned on, the fan coil operates at the first speed. As you can see, if the air temperature deviates from the setpoint by 1°C, the second fan speed is switched on. At a deviation on 2 °C the third speed joins.

Moreover, this algorithm operates both in cooling and heating mode. There is a smoothing of the temperature regime in the room. Yes, all this functions so well that no matter how you twist it, the temperature still reaches the set temperature. An example is below.

Two four-pipe fan coil units were installed in a 90m² room. We installed air temperature sensors on the air intake of fan coil units. One fancoil serviced one part of the room, where audio / video equipment was installed, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the sunny side, and besides, there were always people in this part of the room.

The second fan coil served the rest of the room. She was a checkpoint with a corridor to other rooms.

Control panels were in one place. Set on both consoles 23°C. For an hour, the fan coil units “played” with the speeds and valves of hot and cold water, and then the temperature on the first fan coil unit froze at 23.5 ° C, on the second 23 ° C. And no matter what we did (turned on / off the equipment, closed / opened the curtains, drove 3-4 people into different zones), the temperature on both panels changed by ± 0.5 ° С. Shine!!! And the curtain. :)

Not expecting such uniformity in air temperature ourselves, after repeated experiments and satisfied owners, we decided to offer our customers this A1 control panel and posted the cost of these remote controls on the website in the price list section. The control panel and the control module can be purchased as part of the A1 control panel or separately.

In conclusion, I will say that the ideal indoor climate can only be achieved through repeated experiments and experiments. And this remote control A1 will allow you to get a little closer to your ideals.

P.S. At the moment, the A1 fan coil control panels have been discontinued, and several other options have come out instead. Firstly, the A4 fan coil control controller, you can connect the PU-2M control panel to it. Secondly, this control panel can be connected to the M2 controller (supply unit control controller with heating element). Thirdly, the room thermostat A2 for two-pipe fan coil units (either for heat or for cold) was released. In our catalog, in the section, these controllers, remotes and thermostats are presented, where you can also find out the current cost.
